Mi Dia Grande en Lima con amigo Pedro!
My big day out in Lima with Pedro, a really good friend of Annie´s and Limeñan, started bizarrely at a colegio that used to be a casa built by an eccentric italian family in the 19th century- Castillo Rospigliosi, Santa Beatriz! Mad italians.
Flora Tristan Centro de la Mujer Peruana, Ave. Arequipa- Pedro introduced me to the lawyer and Programmes co-ordinator Ivonne Macassi Leon. We talked about the importance of women´s rights and participation, and the causes of abuses against women in peru. It was a very inspiring moment for me.
Casa Aliaga balcon, Lima centro- it took Pedro and myself ages to find this casa. It is located at the end of Jiron de la Union, near el rio Rimac, but I am glad we found it! The woodwork is exquisite. It stands on land given in 1535 to Jeronimo de Aliaga, one of Pizarro´s faithful 13 followers and has been occupied by the Aliaga familia ever since.
Iglesia Santo Domingo, Lima centro- the tomb of Santa Rosa (the first saint of the Americas!). The church was built on land also granted by Francisco Pizarro to the Dominican Friar Vicente Valverde, who accompanied Pizarro throughout the conquest and was instrumental in persuading him to execute the captured and ransomed Inca, Atahualpa! The church also holds the tomb of San Martin de Porres, one of the few black saints.
