Flora Tristan (1803-1844) was a french socialist writer and activist. She was also one of the founders of modern feminism and Paul Gauguin's grandmother. Her father, Mariano Tristán y Moscoso, an Arequipa-born Peruvian colonel of the Spanish Navy. When her father died the situation of Flora and her mother changed drastically from the high standards of living they were accustomed to, prompting them in 1832 to go to Arequipa, to claim her paternal inheritance which was in possession of her uncle Pío de Tristán. She remained in Peru until 1834.

Though she never secured the inheritance Tristan wrote a travel diary about her experiences in Peru during the country's tumultuous post-independence period. The diary was published in 1838, ´Pérégrinations d'une paria´. Other works include ´Promenades in London´ (1840) and ´The Workers' Union´ (1843).

Lindsay's mum bought her a lovely hard back copy of Perigrinations... before she travelled to Peru in 86. So I read it and was fascinated by Flora Tristan so when I went to work in Lima I was so amazed to find out that Flora Tristan is one of the main feminist organisations in Peru. Ax
