Salineras
The Inca salt pans of Salineras are still in use today. The Incas developed a spring heavy-laden with salt in to an extensive irrigation system which flows down the mountain in to the salt pans. Families that live nearby still work the salt pans and usually own 1-2 each of the salt pans.
We were visiting out of season (muchas lluvia!) but it was worth the 3km walk up the mountain to see it. After a torrential downpour walking down the mountain I came to regret wearing the shorts and had flashbacks to summer holidays in England having to wear shorts and the rain and the wind lashing the backs of the legs!
